– A villa in the city center
Having been neglected for half a century, this house has been reconfigurated internally to house a growing family and carefully restored externally to correspond with the family of historic houses in the street.
Tucked away on a quiet street behind Frederiksberg Town Hall and Frederiksberg Have in central Copenhagen the house sits quietly reminiscing its suburban time.

The house have had three owners. Built by a carpenter in 1912 the house is one of a series of historic houses on the street - typical for this time with its solid exposed brick walls, pitched slate roof and detailed woodwork with details referring to previous historical periods in Denmark.
An architect bought the house and extended it towards the north with rooms facing the garden to create space for an architecture office.
In 1962 engineer, doctor and psychologist Steen Arhrenkiel bought the house. Steen replaced original windows, doors, stairs and kitchen with low quality replacements. In his late years he left the house to decay, using the rooms facing the garden experimenting with genetic modification of plants, collecting rare mineral stones in the basement, especially cryolite, collecting stamps. The house was overgrown and completely cluttered.
The current owners took over the house in 2022.
Technically the house was in poor condition, so we started replacing the slate roof with a climate-friendly build up using wood-fiber insulation, exchanging the windows to new imitating the originals, renovating the facades.
Internally we wanted to bring back some of the original atmosphere to the house while adding a new modern layer suiting the modern family living there now.
A new staircase was placed in the middle of the plan to create a social space connecting the floors and drawing in skylight. New doors was set at an angle to create views across the house, creating social visual connections making the house feel fluid and dynamic.
In the extension toward north we emphasized the connection to the garden, expanding the room and adding a door opening towards the garden.
